Dr. C. Everett Koop, Former United States Surgeon General on prolotherapy — “Prolotherapy is the name some people use for a type of medical intervention in musculoskeletal pain that causes a proliferation of collegen fibers such as those found in ligaments and tendons… I have been a patient who has benefitted from Prolotherapy.” [Prolo Your Pain Away, pg. 15, 1998 edition Dr. Ross Hauser]
What is Prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy is an injection technique that stimulates the body to produce collagen and cartilage in injured areas. The treatment stimulates the immune system to bring fibroblasts and chondroblasts to areas of pain and injury and stimulate healing.
How is Prolotherapy done?
Prolotherapy treatment is the injection of a solution (Dextrose- pharmaceutical-grade sugar water and lidocaine) in the painful area or joint that creates a short duration of inflammation. Inflammation is the process by which the body heals injured areas. Prolotherapy stimulates this healing cascade stimulating repair of collagen and cartilage. The new collagen and cartilage strengthens and restores joints, and supporting soft tissue, reducing or eliminating many different types of pain.
